Normal Class Concrete

Overview

“Normal Class” concrete is a term applied to a standardised range of concrete mixes.

Normal Class concrete refers to any concrete without specified performance requirements other than 28-day strength. This includes up to 50MPa concrete.

Designed for everyday applications such as residential and commercial foundations and slabs, as well as driveways, footpaths, hardstands, garage and shed floors.

Set out in the Australian Standard AS1379, normal class concrete must adhere to a range of predefined specifications including:

  • Compressive strength grades of 20MPa, 25MPa, 32MPa, 40MPa and 50MPa
  • Maximum coarse aggregate size of 10, 14 or 20mm
  • Slump at time of delivery: 80mm +/-15mm as standard

Concrete for Driveways

For most driveways, especially in a residential application, normal class concrete with a minimum 25MPa is recommended.

As is often sought in residential driveways, a range of decorative additions, finishes and aggregates are available.

Normal class concrete is manufactured in accordance with AS1379.

Strength

  • Minimum 20MPa
  • Vehicles 3-10t require 25MPa
  • Vehicles >10t required engineered design

Thickness

  • 100mm
  • Vehicles 3-10t require 150mm
  • Vehicles >10t required engineered design

Aggregates

  • 10 and 20mm mix

Slump

  • 80mm +/- 15mm as standard
  • Can be specified to suit your job – please contact us for advice.

*Other considerations for concrete include abrasion resistance and soil/groundwater salinity.

Concrete for Slabs

Reinforced concrete slabs are by far the most popular ground floor construction substrate used today. Slabs can be on-ground, suspended, or a mix of both.

Reinforced concrete slabs are by far the most popular ground floor construction substrate used today. Slabs can be on-ground, suspended, or a mix of both.

Not only do they offer a solid foundation, but they also have a range of other benefits:

  • Excellent thermal mass
  • Termite resistance
  • Can incorporate underfloor heating
  • Can be left exposed in a range of attractive finishes

Note: before footings and slab design can be undertaken, a soil classification will be required – available from Hunter Civilab.

Standard specifications

  • 10 and 20mm aggregate mix
  • 80mm +/- 15mm slump as standard

Concrete for Foundations

Concrete foundations provide support for the walls and floor of a build.

Concrete foundations can be incorporated into the slab by pouring thicker around the edges, or as strip footing on which the structure will sit.

Normal class concrete is generally used in foundation applications.

Standard specifications

  • 10 and 20mm aggregates
  • 80mm +/- 15mm slump as standard

Concrete for Footpaths

Concrete footpaths are a common choice for both public and domestic application due to their superior properties and flexible design options.

Benefits

  • Decorative finishes including colour, patterns and textures
  • Ability for curved edges
  • Easy to clean and maintain
  • Hard wearing
  • Cost effective

Standard specifications

  • 20, 25 and 32MPa
  • 100mm as standard
